Hands-on learning is learning through experience and by doing activities.  It is a great teaching activity to include in your classroom. This will explain to you what hands-on learning is and the importance of it, as well as give some examples of how to incorporate hands-on learning in the classroom.

What is hands-on learning?

Hands-on learning is learning by doing something through movement and by creating things by using your hands. It helps to engage students in learning by providing an experience for them in the classroom. This type of learning process allows students to learn by doing an activity rather than just being told about it.

It allows students to observe and explore the world around them and to ask questions. This learning process also provides experiences for students to engage their senses and become aware of their surroundings.

Benefits of hands-on learning!

There are many benefits to hands-on learning.  The following are just a few of the benefits of implementing this type of learning.

One of the benefits of hands-on learning is that it is fun and engaging.  Students can develop skills much better when they are having fun.  Providing these experiences will engage students in the lesson you are teaching, but can also help them to have fun and interact with one another.

Hands-on learning provides students an opportunity to explore the world around them using their senses.   It also allows learning from real-life experiences.  Using actual experiences to learn concepts and skills can be much more effective in learning.

Another benefit of hands-on learning is that it helps to build fine motor skills by using activities such as cutting, sorting, molding, or sticking.  Students can strengthen their hand muscles and learn functional skills that they will be able to use for the rest of their life by doing these activities.

One other benefit of hands-on learning is that it helps to engage multiple areas of the brain. When combining activities such as talking, listening, and using hands can activate more areas of the brain and also will help students learn.  Learning happens when the brain is engaged and can make connections with new and familiar patterns.  By doing this, students can retain information longer.

Example learning activities

There are many ways that you can utilize hands-on learning in your classroom.  These are just a few examples of ways that you can implement hands-on learning in your classroom.

Building words with Legos, snap cubes, and other objects is one way that you can implement this type of learning.  Placing a letter(s) on the object, you will then have your students build words. This is a very simple activity but can be both fun and engaging for your classroom learning.

STEM activities are also another fun way to introduce learning in the classroom. These types of activities create a space where students are allowed to research, problem-solve, and collaborate with peers.

Another fun way to use hands-on learning in the classroom is by using Play-doh in your lessons and creating things.  A tub of Play-doh can provide many options for helping to develop coordination and fine motor skills.  Students can manipulate and create various objects using Play-doh.
